It's one of the questions we get asked most often here at Frank Nutt: "I'm thinking about a Brother — but which one?" And honestly, it's a great question. The Brother range is one of the most varied in the industry, covering everything from a first sewing machine for a complete beginner through to professional-grade embroidery equipment used by businesses. That breadth is part of what makes Brother such a popular choice — but it can also make narrowing things down feel a little overwhelming.
Why Brother?
Brother has been making sewing machines for decades, and their Innov-is range — pronounced "innovis" — sits at the heart of what we stock here at Frank Nutt. The range is well-built, well-supported, and backed by a three-year parts and labour guarantee when you buy from us. They're also machines we service in-house, which matters if you want to know there's someone you can call on down the line.
One of the things the team genuinely appreciates about Brother is how consistently accessible their machines feel — even the more feature-rich models are designed to be intuitive rather than intimidating.
Step one: What do you mainly want to sew?
This is always the right place to start, and it shapes everything else.
General sewing — dressmaking, repairs, home furnishings If you're primarily after a reliable everyday sewing machine for garments, repairs, or soft furnishings, you don't need to spend a fortune. Brother's entry-level Innov-is machines — like the Innov-is 15 and the Innov-is A50 — are capable, comfortable machines with enough stitches to cover most projects. The A50 has 50 built-in utility and decorative stitches, an intuitive jog dial, and a clear LCD display. It handles a good range of fabrics without any fuss.

If you want a little more room to grow, the Innov-is A150 steps things up nicely — 150 decorative stitches, four lettering stitches, an auto thread cutter, and a slide speed control. It's a machine designed to last you a long time, developing with you as your skills build.
Quilting If quilting is your main focus, you'll want to pay attention to the free-arm (the working area to the right of the needle — the longer, the better for spreading out a quilt), the stitch variety, and Brother's SFDS — the Square Feed Drive System. The SFDS grips the fabric more firmly from below, giving you smooth, even feeding on any weight of fabric, which matters a great deal when you're working through multiple layers.
Embroidery Frank Nutt stocks both Brother PR Series machines for those seeking high-specification, multi-needle professional embroidery, and Brother VR Series machines offering advanced features with a camera-based positioning system on the PR1060W— visit https://www.franknutt.co.uk/proffesional-embroidery/pr-vr-machines to find out more about both ranges.
Step two: What's your experience level?
We see customers across the full spectrum here — people buying their very first machine, and experienced sewists who know exactly what they're looking for. It's worth being honest with yourself about where you sit.
Complete beginners The Innov-is 15 is a lovely place to start. It has 16 stitches, a top-loading bobbin, a built-in needle threader, and a sliding speed limiter — so you can keep things slow and controlled while you're learning. It's compact, easy to understand, and genuinely forgiving as a first machine. Prices for Brother sewing machines at Frank Nutt start from £249.
If you'd like to spend a little more from the outset and avoid outgrowing your machine too quickly, the A50 or A150 both offer more stitches and features while still being easy to pick up. The A150 in particular is designed to grow with you rather than be replaced.
Intermediate sewists If you've been sewing for a while and feel ready to upgrade, you're probably at the point where the frustrations of a basic machine outweigh its limitations.
Confident and enthusiast sewists If you already know your way around a machine and you're looking for something genuinely capable, the Stellaire Innov-is XJ2 or the Innov-is 2700 are worth serious consideration. These are machines with no significant compromises — they're designed for people who sew regularly and want everything to work exactly as it should.
Step three: What features actually matter?
It's easy to get drawn into spec lists, so let's focus on the features that make a real difference in day-to-day sewing.
SFDS — Square Feed Drive System Found on mid-range and above Brother machines, this gives you smooth, consistent fabric feeding regardless of weight. If you work with a lot of different fabrics — from fine jersey to thick denim — it's a feature worth having.
ICAPS — Integrated Cloth Automated Presser-foot Sensor The ICAPS system automatically detects fabric thickness and adjusts the presser foot pressure on the fly. In practice, this means you get even stitching even when you're sewing over a seam join or switching between fabric layers without having to stop and fiddle with settings.
Automatic needle threader This sounds trivial until you've threaded a needle a thousand times. Most Innov-is machines include this, and it's genuinely useful.
Touchscreen vs. dial/button controls The mid-range and upper machines use colour touchscreens for stitch selection and adjustments, which makes navigating the stitch library much quicker. If you're planning to use a wide variety of stitches regularly, a touchscreen is worth having. For simpler machines, a jog dial and LCD display work perfectly well.
Wireless connectivity and USB If you're into embroidery, the ability to transfer designs wirelessly or via USB is important. Brother's PE Design software and the Artspira app both allow you to create and send your own designs to compatible machines — it's a capable ecosystem once you start exploring it.
Working area / free-arm length The longer the free-arm, the more workspace you have to the right of the needle. For quilters especially, this is worth checking.
Step four: What's your budget?
Brother sewing machines at Frank Nutt start from around £249 and £299 for the Innov-is 15, and the range moves upward through the A Series, the sewing and embroidery machines, the V Series dedicated embroidery machines, and the Stellaire at the luxury end..
We'd always encourage you to buy the right machine for what you actually want to do, rather than a machine that's just within budget but will leave you frustrated in six months. That said, we're very good at finding the best fit within what works for you financially — it's what we've been doing since 1985.
Our after-sales support
One of the practical advantages of buying a Brother sewing machine from Frank Nutt is that we service and repair Brother machines in-house. Brother's machines have become increasingly sophisticated over the years, and having a workshop that knows the brand well — and can order parts directly from the manufacturer — makes a real difference if anything needs attention.
All Brother machines bought from us come with a three-year parts and labour guarantee (two years on certain A-Grade models). And if you ever have a question after your machine arrives, you can ring us on 0121 444 3978 and someone who knows Brother machines will pick up.

Still not sure?
That's completely fine — and it's exactly why we have over 100 machines on display at our shop in Kings Heath, Birmingham. We'll let you sit down at the machines you're considering, try them with real fabric, and talk through what you're looking to make.
