If you've ever walked into a sewing shop and felt slightly overwhelmed by the Bernina range, you're in good company. It's one of the most admired sewing machine brands in the world, and for good reason — but the breadth of the range, and the investment involved, means choosing the right model deserves a bit of thought.
We've been a specialist Bernina dealer here at Frank Nutt for over 30 years, and we're proud to be one of the largest Bernina stockists in the UK. Over those three decades, we've helped an enormous number of customers find the right machine for them — beginners buying their first quality sewing machine, quilters looking for a bigger workspace, embroiderers stepping up to something more capable.
Why Bernina? A Bit of Context Before We Begin
Bernina sewing machines are developed in Switzerland. They have been since 1893, and the brand hasn't compromised on that. Every machine that leaves the factory carries genuine precision engineering, and you feel it the moment you start sewing — in the smoothness of the stitch, the feel of the controls, and the way the machine handles a difficult seam without complaint.
That quality comes at a price, and it's worth acknowledging that upfront. Bernina sewing machines sit at the premium end of the market. But they also come with a seven-year parts and labour guarantee when purchased from Frank Nutt, provided your machine is serviced every three years by a Bernina specialist dealer — something we can handle in-house.
They hold their value well, they last, and the accessories ecosystem is one of the most comprehensive in the industry. For many people, a Bernina sewing machine is the last sewing machine they ever need to buy.
Step One: What Kind of Sewing Do You Mainly Want to Do?
This is always the right place to start because the Bernina range is structured around sewing types, and understanding what you actually want to make will point you towards the right part of the range almost immediately.
Everyday Sewing — Garments, Alterations & Home Décor
For general sewing, the most important things to think about are stitch variety, workspace, and how the machine feels to use day to day.
Bernina's 3 Series is where the range begins, and it's worth saying clearly: even the entry-level Bernina is not an entry-level machine in any ordinary sense. The Bernina 325 has 419 built-in stitches including two alphabets, a 4.3" colour touchscreen with on-screen guidance, adjustable presser foot pressure, and a Sewing Consultant feature that recommends settings based on your fabric and application.
As you move up through the 4 and 5 Series, the workspace grows, the stitch library expands, and features like Bernina's Adaptive Thread Tension are introduced. This system electronically adjusts thread tension with every individual stitch, helping you achieve consistent results across different fabrics without constantly tweaking settings.
Another feature worth considering is Bernina's Dual Feed system. Built into QE and selected higher-end models, it feeds fabric evenly from both above and below simultaneously, much like a built-in walking foot. It's particularly useful for jersey, velvet, and fabrics that tend to shift or stretch while sewing.
Quilting
Quilting places very specific demands on a sewing machine. The two features that matter most are workspace and stitch consistency during free-motion work.
Bernina quotes workspace in inches to the right of the needle. A machine like the Bernina 570QE, with 8.5 inches of space, makes handling larger quilt projects significantly easier than machines with smaller work areas.
For free-motion quilting, the BSR — Bernina Stitch Regulator — is one of the standout features in the Bernina range. The BSR automatically adjusts sewing speed to match the movement of your fabric, helping maintain perfectly even stitch lengths whether you're moving quickly or slowly.
QE models also tend to include Dual Feed, hover functionality, jumbo bobbins for fewer thread changes, and a patchwork foot for precise quarter-inch seams. These are practical features that quilters genuinely use every session.
Bernina QE models are available throughout the range, from the 475QE in the 4 through to the 570QE in the 5 Series to the 770QE PRO in the 7 Series, offering increasing workspace and functionality as you move up.
Embroidery
One of Bernina's strengths in embroidery is its modular approach. Many Bernina sewing machines can accept an optional embroidery module, allowing you to add embroidery capability later without replacing your sewing machine entirely.
If embroidery is already a priority, Bernina also offers models supplied with the embroidery unit included. Models with an “E” suffix — such as the 500E or 590E — are embroidery-focused machines.
The embroidery area varies by model, and larger hoops allow you to complete bigger designs in a single placement. Higher-end 7 Series PRO models also introduce features like pinpoint laser placement and advanced embroidery stitch editing for greater accuracy and control.
Precise Dressmaking & Tailoring
If precision sewing and tailoring are your focus, the 7 Series PRO models are particularly impressive. The Bernina 735 PRO, for example, uses a 5.5mm stitch width instead of the wider 9mm format found on quilting-focused models, making it ideal for detailed dressmaking and fine garment construction.
It also includes features such as the Walking Foot #50, built-in Dual Feed, a 7" touchscreen, and a jumbo bobbin — all designed for sewists who want absolute control and refinement.

Step Two: What's Your Experience Level?
New to Bernina (or Newer to Sewing)
If you're considering your first quality sewing machine, the Bernina 325 or 335 are sensible places to start. They're approachable to use thanks to touchscreen guidance and built-in help features, but still deliver the quality and engineering Bernina is known for.
We also have Bernina machines available to try in our Kings Heath shop, and we always encourage customers to sit down and sew on a machine before deciding. The feel of a Bernina is something that's difficult to fully explain until you've experienced it yourself.
Intermediate Sewists Looking to Upgrade
If you've been sewing for a while and want a machine that offers greater capability and long-term reliability, the 435, 475QE, or 480 are all excellent options depending on your priorities.
Quilters in particular often appreciate the built-in Dual Feed on the 475QE, while embroiderers may find the 500E especially appealing.
Experienced Sewists & Enthusiasts
For experienced sewists who sew regularly and want a machine that genuinely grows with them, the 570QE, 590, 735 PRO, and 790 PRO are exceptional choices. These machines have remarkable depth and become more rewarding the more extensively you use them.
Step Three: What Bernina Features Actually Matter?
Dual Feed
Bernina's built-in Dual Feed system — integrated into the machine rather than attached as an external walking foot — feeds the fabric evenly from both the top and the bottom. This is especially valuable for slippery fabrics, jersey, multiple layers, and quilt sandwiches. It engages and disengages easily and is available on mid-range and above models.
BSR — Bernina Stitch Regulator
As described above: a foot that connects to your machine and keeps stitch length consistent during free-motion quilting, regardless of how fast or slowly you're moving the fabric. Included with the 570QE and higher models; also available as an optional accessory for compatible machines.
Adaptive Thread Tension
Bernina's electronic thread tension system adjusts automatically with every stitch, adapting to the fabric you're working with. In practice, this means one less thing to think about when switching between fabrics or layers.
The Bernina Hook
Bernina's proprietary hook mechanism is one of the reasons their stitch quality is consistently exceptional. It's a rotary hook system engineered to extremely tight tolerances, and it contributes to the smoothness and precision of the stitch across the full width of 5.5mm or 9mm depending on the model.
7" vs. 4.3" touchscreen
The 4 and 5 Series machines use a 4.3" colour touchscreen; the 7 Series upgrades to a 7" colour touchscreen. If you're someone who uses a wide variety of stitches regularly, the larger screen with the 7 Series interface makes navigating quicker and more comfortable.
Embroidery module compatibility
Many Bernina sewing machines in the range can accept an optional embroidery module, which turns them into a sewing and embroidery combination machine. This is a significant advantage — you're not locked into a decision about embroidery at the point of purchase.
Step Four: Budget
